In fourth grade art classes students learned about different endangered animals and some of the reasons animals become endangered. Next, using colored pencil, they created a drawing of an endangered animal of their choosing. Once they finished drawing, they added a painted foreground of the animal's environment on transparency film. Lastly, students wrote about their animal. These pieces of artwork look amazing in the Mackenzie lobby.

Having conducted a literary analysis of Kate di Camillo's works, on Tuesday, March 11, 4th grade students were delighted to meet "their favorite author." Enthralled by di Camillo's writing, students were eager to learn more of what prompted her to write and how she incorporated the level of craft evident across her works which captivated them as readers. To date, these students have analyzed, "Because of Winn Dixie, The Tiger Rising, and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane." As the analysis of each novel drew to a close, students said, "that was the best Kate di Camillo novel,"and then we read another...which led to another...with each literary work engaging the young readers all the more. The virtual author visit served as the perfect culminating activity for their studies.

Our 5th graders have been diving deep into the fascinating world of Earth’s systems! 🌎✨ They explored why some areas receive more rain than others, gaining a better understanding of the factors that shape our planet's weather patterns.
As part of their hands-on learning, the students built their own freshwater collection systems, putting their engineering skills to the test! 🏗️ They had a blast working together to design and test their models, learning about real-world solutions to water collection.
In addition, they discovered how engineers work to clean wastewater. 🧪💧 The students participated in an exciting experiment where they tested different combinations of chemicals to create a "Hot Yellow Gas"—an essential part of the wastewater treatment process in areas with limited rainfall. This challenge helped them understand the importance of science and engineering in solving global water issues.
It’s been a week full of exploration, teamwork, and hands-on learning! We are so proud of how our 5th graders applied their creativity and problem-solving skills in real-world contexts. 👏🌟

Mackenzie students & teachers were sent on a scavenger hunt today to celebrate the 100th Day of School. Throughout the building 100 pictures of our building principal, Mr. Carpentieri, were hidden. Our learning community was tasked with finding the pictures and attaching them to the 100 chart on the main office door. By 2:15 the last picture was found to complete our 100th Day of School Challenge!

Mackenzie Elementary School is celebrating the 100th day of school on Wednesday, February 26. We are excited to see our student's creativity in the way they will represent the number 100. Will it be by dressing as an elder? Maybe a representation of the number 100 on their clothing? Show us how you are celebrating being 100 days smarter!!

Congratulations to our DARE graduates! Our 5th grade students have been working hard in D.A.R.E. They have learned about peer pressure and bullying. They learned about the health effects of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. They got to experience beer googles and what a DUI check consist of. They learned different ways to deal with stressful and uncomfortable situations. They have learned a lot in these short few weeks that they will take with them as teenager and adults.

Our 5th grade students have been reading Dogman by Dav Pilkey, an all time favorite of most of our students. They have used the book for our reciprocal teaching strategy in their ELA class. They took a field trip to see the movie and were able to compare and contrast the movie and the book. They truly enjoyed this experience.

Winter clubs at Mackenzie have begun. Puzzle club is piecing it together! The children attending puzzle club reported the puzzles they worked with were “kinda hard…I have to look at how the pieces DO go together and take my time or they won’t fit.” Asked if they enjoyed their first club date, the smiles said it all! Having fun is the name of the game…..errr puzzle.

After learning about the geography of New York State, 4th Grade learned about the “Haudesaunee” or” “The people of the longhouse” as the Iroquois were known as. They’ve learned of the 5 Nations and their geographic locations within NYS, their culture, and what’s happened over time. Asked if they could travel back in time, would they enjoy that? Students said that “they would like to travel back in time, but for about a month as the children then had a harder life than today and life was more difficult all around”. - 4th graders.
