Amber Sawyer is an author from Wisconsin. She came to visit Mackenzie Elementary School on November 3rd to promote her book "Love to Race". Her children's book is about her retired racehorse, Derek's, career in harness racing until an injury sidelined him. He was nursed back to health after Amber adopted him and he eventually became one of the oldest winning racehorses in the United States. Thank you Ms. Sawyer for coming to share your story with our students!

Students in their 5th grade ELA classes used hexagonal thinking maps that paired with their novel study "Restart" by Gordon Korman. This reading comprehension strategy allows students to discuss and connect characters and ideas from the novel study together. Each groups' webs are different for different reasons. They explain their thinking maps with each other which allows them to dig into deeper more complex concepts.

Thank you Mackenzie PTA! Every year members of our PTA "sneak" onto campus on a fall weekend and lay a pumpkin patch in the front lawn of our school to surprise our students and staff. Not only does it give our school a festive autumn look but each student can take a pumpkin home with them. We love this tradition!

6th grade art classes at Mackenzie Elementary School are fortunate enough to be able to go on a field trip every fall to Storm King Art Center. This outdoor museum located in New Windsor, NY provides our students with an opportunity to view large-scale outdoor art instillations. Fall clubs are in full swing at Mackenzie! Ms. Swinford's STEAM club for primary students built a different type of paper airplane. They added different engineering strategies to make their planes flyer further. In intermediate club the 5th & 6th graders were able to develop different snap circuits to make their fans, sound machines or light domes work. They had to find and fix mistakes in order to make those electrical connections.
