GRM’s 5th grade classes have been traveling back in time! 🏛️✨
Students explored the Ancient Civilizations of the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayans, writing essays that compared and contrasted topics such as farming, religion, written language, architecture, and social structure. To wrap up the unit, students collaborated with Ms. Brown our Art Teacher to create amazing 3D pyramids, Chinampas (floating gardens) with Mrs. Marcinak, Aztec mosaic masks with Mrs. Saavedra and each student also colored their own Aztec Calendar with Mrs MacWilliams. What a creative and educational end to an exciting unit! 🎨📚

Our fifth graders have been working so hard the last few weeks doing their ecosystem research projects. They created their trifolds based on accurate research methods and then designed an accurate representation of their ecosystem. They blew their presentation out of the water with their quick responses to their classmates questions. These projects will be displayed in the STEAM fair later this school year.

On Friday, December 19 the 5th grade students from the George Ross Mackenzie Elementary School graduated from the Sullivan County Sheriff's D.A.R.E program. Our students, led by our school resource officer, Deputy Lynch, worked for 10-weeks learning about drug and alcohol resistance, positive communication, and peer pressure. Our D.A.R.E essay and poster winners were Colten Daletto, Gunner VanTuyl, Kai Quiles and Evelyn Brundage. We'd like to thank the representatives from Sullivan County who were in attendance at the ceremony: Chair of the Legislature, Nadia Rajsz, Sullivan County Sheriff, Michael Schiff, Sullivan County Undersheriff Eric Chaboty, and retired Sullivan County Sheriff's Lieutenant Luis Alvarez.

Last Friday we welcomed our PreK families into our cafeteria to help our PK students make gingerbread houses. The creations that went home were impressive and will be a nice addition to holiday decorations in our student's homes.

Mrs. Whitney and Mrs. Gallo would like to thank our community for the generous donations they received over the last two months during the "Eight Weeks of Giving" food drive. The Backpack Program runs solely on food and monetary donations from members of our community. You have helped stock our pantry to ensure students are fed on weekends and during extended school breaks. We wish you all a healthy and happy holiday season!

What Brings You JOY?
This bulletin board was a student-led Leader in Me project. A group of students in our intermediate wing chose each element they wanted to add and worked together as a team to complete each task. The project involved visiting classrooms in our primary wing to work with students in those grades to create some of the elements that were incorporated into the project. This interactive bulletin board asks all who pass by to fill it up with what brings them JOY. The problem solving, teamwork and leadership skills of our students was evident in the execution of this project. Special thanks to Mrs. Parker for supervising this activity of the Leader in Me Culture Team.

Last week, the third grade students at GRM started their Fantasy Football Reading Challenge. Students were drafted onto teams, and each group of students was allowed to choose which NFL team to represent. The more chapter books they read, the more points they will score for their team! Completing a chapter book earns the team a touchdown and completing a summary earns the team a field goal! We would like to give a special thanks to our fourth grade “team owners,” who helped to make the draft extra exciting with their leadership and enthusiasm. The Broncos, Bills, Ravens, Packers, 49ers, Giants, Falcons, and Jaguars will compete over the next eight weeks to become the reading champions. Happy reading!

The Beginning Buzz is a wonderful initiative that has truly transformed into a platform for student leadership and empowerment. Launched as part of the Leader in Me program and spearheaded by the Culture Team, this school-wide meeting brings the entire school community together every Monday. It provides a platform for students to receive important weekly updates, learn about the Leader in Me habit of the month, discover fun facts, and celebrate AOK (Acts of Kindness) awards.
This year, the transformation is complete, as our 6th graders have taken the reins entirely. They not only present the content but also create the media presentations with enthusiasm and creativity. Every Friday, the media production group meets in Mrs. Gallo's office to prepare for the upcoming meeting. This initiative not only fosters a sense of belonging but also develops essential leadership skills in our students, making us immensely proud of their achievements.

Students in kindergarten through second grade had their own early Thanksgiving Day parade. After reading the story, "Balloons Over Broadway ", the students decorated their own balloons to parade through the school. The other students and staff members lined the halls to celebrate their creations. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
